What we do
The Mat-Su Ski Club promotes Nordic skiing opportunities in the southern Mat-Su Valley for fun, community, and health.
The Mat-Su Ski Club is dedicated to providing exceptional Nordic skiing opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages and skill levels. We meticulously groom Nordic ski trails at the Government Peak Recreation Area (GPRA), Independence Mine and Archangel Road at Hatcher Pass and the Matanuska Moose Range. We maintain and are responsible for expanding the world-class Nordic trail system and facilities at GPRA.
Our club offers a range of programs for all ages and skill levels, including educational clinics, adult ski lessons, and our cornerstone Junior Nordics program, where hundreds of kids learn to ski each winter. We organize community ski events, run a series of Nordic races, and partner with local high schools to host their competitions at the venues we maintain. We’re proud to host high-level, FIS-sanctioned races at GPRA as well.
We also offer Mat-Su Nordic—a year-round, community-focused athletic training program led by professional coaches. This program supports everyone from recreational seniors to kids aiming for elite competition. Beyond skiing, we host a variety of seasonal, family-friendly community gatherings on the trails—no skis required!
We offer year-round healthy activities and programs to the whole community. We organize volunteers, raise funds, pursue grants, manage projects, and work closely with public and private agencies to build and maintain ski trails and facilities.
We ski!
Club History
The Club was born out of efforts to develop the Crevasse Moraine trails in the 1980’s and the Colony High School trails in the 1990’s. We sponsored a small Junior Nordic ski program from 1987 to 2000. In 2007, as a result of our expanding role in developing the GPRA trail system, we organized as the Mat-Su Ski Club, receiving Federal non-profit 501(c)(3) status in September 2008. Since the initial construction of GPRA, we have expanded the Nordic trail system there to include internationally-accredited trails and race facilities and we have developed a modern grooming fleet that includes two PistenBulleys. In 2024 we hosted the Arctic Winter Games Nordic events at GPRA. The Club has a successful history of achieving big goals by partnering with the Mat-Su Borough, schools, Alaska State Parks, non-profit organizations, and the community.
The Club has about 500 adult members now.
Club Finances
The Club’s core programs are self-supporting. The Club generates income from its Junior Nordics and Mat-Su Nordic programs, Membership dues, Adult Ski Lessons program, other events, and annual fundraisers. Support supplied by the Club for high school through FIS-level Nordic races is another source of income. The Club receives an annual recurring level of donations from the community, individuals, corporations, and local businesses. Foundation, corporate, and local community support have funded the largest infrastructure projects and capital purchases undertaken by the Club. We are a volunteer-driven organization with seven part-time staff members. Excess funds go to the development of trails and facilities, and to set aside for future equipment needs.
