Welcome New Board Members

Hans Hill (President), Ashley Wise, Natalie King, Chris Tomsen, Lucas Parker and Dave Freer.

Hans Hill is the new President of the Mat-Su Ski Club. Hans is a born and raised Alaskan; learning to ski through Junior Nordics in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley.  He fostered a love for the sport under the coaching of Ed Strabel on through high school.  He now hopes to pass the passion on to his nine month old son.  Having entered his seventh season on the board of directors for the MSSC, he was asked if he would be interested in filling the large shoes of Ed by becoming the president of the board.  He hopes to continue the good work of the outgoing president while still getting out and hitting the trails.

Ashley Wise has spent the last 5 years in Palmer as the Program Manager for NOLS Alaska. One of his favorite winter pasttimes is grooming Archangel Road.

Dave Freer has lived in the valley for over 30 years and has been involved with numerous hiking, biking, skiing and trail groups. This is something he feels is important not only for the recreation and health of our current population but for future residents as well.

Natalie King is a ski coach at Wasilla High School. She came to AK looking for shiny rocks, stayed to ski the mountains, run the trails, and keep finding the shiny rocks.

Chris Tomsen skied for Dimond HS Army/ West Point. Past assistant ski coach, loves skiing all outdoors, touring, 'ranging', biathlon, pine tar aroma, dragging sleds, compass & map.

Junior Nordics needs coaches! Come help us teach kids to enjoy skiing and the outdoors. You don't need to be an expert skier or have prior coaching experience, just a willingness to engage positively with kids. We will train you up. Our season is from the beginning of January to the first week in March. Contact Dave Musgrave at for more information or if you are interested.

Ski rentals
If you were unable to make the ski pickup date in October, we will have another ski pickup at Government Peak Recreation Area on Saturday, December 5 from 3-3:30pm. We have a limited number of skis & poles still available, so it is first come first serve. This will be checks only. Please bring 2 checks payable to the Mat-Su Ski Club, $50 per set of skis/poles & $150 for the deposit for each set of skis/poles.

Junior Nordics Wax Package
Kick waxes are needed for classic skiing in order to create enough push with the ski to propel the skier forward. For each family, you will need a range of kick waxes for various temperatures, a wax cork to smooth out the kick wax and a scraper to remove the kick wax.

Backcountry Bike & Ski at 132 W. Arctic Ave in Palmer has put together the above Junior Nordics Wax Package. It includes 3 kick waxes (blue, extra blue & purple), a scraper and a wax cork. The total cost for this package is $48.41. It is very important for everyone to have these before the first session of Junior Nordics on January 4th and 5th. Just stop by Backcountry Bike & Ski and ask for the Junior Nordics Wax Package.
