THANK YOU !

The 2015 Mat Su Ski for Women was a fantastic event!  Even the weather turned out perfect. In the second year of this Valley event.... it grew over twice the size over last year both in number of skiers and donations. We had 104 skiers this year, and raised $1980 for Alaska Family Services to help women and families in crisis in the Mat Su region.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event a success including our volunteer committee of Rebecca Buchanan, Tracy Houser and Mary Ann Holmquist, awesome coordinators. Our Board and other Club members who volunteered to groom, set up, monitor, sweep, and take down. Maritt and many other volunteers who worked hard to make it all happen.

And of course a special thanks to our sponsor Mat Su Health Foundation, and all the local businesses who contributed the great raffle prizes, and all the folks who skied in such creative costumes and shared all those tasty dishes at the pot luck!

We'll do it all again next year!

  • Hatcher Pass - 3:00 PM, Mon Mar 30, 2015 by aktrailbreaker
Skate skied groomed road between A Frame and H Pass mine buildings, and then all XC loops east of road. All trails are in very good condition, perhaps some of the best skiing all year, not a sign of melt/freeze--it's still winter up there! (and none of the debris, dirt, spruce needles and twigs that have plagued us all year in Los Anchorage--just clean snow!). A few people have been out walking the trails and punched a few footprints in here and there, but nothing extensive. Classic tracks would even be worth skiing; in good condition the higher you get; perhaps a little washed out by the sun and/or haven't been reset recently. A little icy on some of the (downhill) turns, but plenty of granular snow to work w/ and check your speed...it's so good it's probably worth going up after work!

Really nice skate skiing in the bowl today -- several trails creating several loops. Snow up high looked ok for classic, but closer to the parking lot it was more glazed. Plenty of snow up there, though! Thanks to the Mat-Su ski club for the grooming, and please keep us posted with grooming updates for the rest of the season. Anchorage skiers may want to join me in becoming a member of the Mat-Su Ski Club to support grooming efforts at Hatcher. It's not over yet up there! :-)

Archangel Rd was groomed this morning for classic and skating...there are kibbles and bits in the skating lane. You can skijour on Archangel, but beware of the loose dogs greeting your dogs.

Archangel Road: last groomed a couple days ago; good to very good.  Independence Mine, including up and down the valley above and below the lodge, and over through Gold Cord Bowl: groomed today (all save the bowl); amazing.
